Art Statement

I like to see life as a mystery to be solved. The answer is probably never achievable but I like the process of exploring the mystery and drawing a connection between disparate things.  I have a magpie tendency towards knowledge and skills.  I have been a number of things in my life, a lawyer, a biochemist, an artist and am currently training to be a therapist.  Art has for me been a relatively recent addition, I only took it up in 2014 in my mid 30s.

I like thick oil paint using a select palette including ultramarine, alizarin crimson sap green, lamp black and titanium white, applied briskly. The favored surface is covered in textured gesso or over the top of old paintings. I paint still life and landscapes.  Mystery and humour are part of my paintings.  Presenting puzzles and images from an odd angle in a joyful way but with a touch of melancholy.  I am fascination with ancient history, lost civilisations and old scripts like cuneiform. This all found an outlet in art.  I am drawn to elements that reflect this, ancient landscapes, old industrial sites on rivers and still life.

These are all elements that I am trying to take further. I am hoping that slowly by a slightly mysterious process this will form into a more cohesive visual language. Frankly though, I just like painting, I like the physical act of painting the tactile feedback that oil painting provides and I want to do more of it, in different ways, and bring this enjoyment to other people.
